Interview: In Conversation with Ex Hollyoaks star Richard Cambridge starring in the Gran Turismo alongside Orlando Bloom

We had the pleasure of talking to Richard Cambridge about his upcoming role in Gran Turismo starring alongside Orlando Bloom.

Congrats on your new role, it must have been exciting learning to change tires so fast. Was it difficult to do? How long did it take you to learn?

Thank you! Learning to change tyres quickly for the film was quite an adventure. It was definitely a challenge, considering the precision required in such a fast-paced environment. I had the privilege of training with professional GT mechanic Szilard Racz at the Nürburgring in Germany. While I don’t have an exact timeframe, it took some intensive practice to get the hang of it. But it was all worth it for that rush you feel when you’re part of a real pit crew!

What can you tell us about the film?

Gran Turismo is an incredible film based on the true story of Jann Mardenborough. He started as a Gran Turismo gamer and eventually became a professional racecar driver for Nissan. The film chronicles his journey from virtual racing to the real track, featuring intense GT car races and even Le Mans. It’s a story of passion, dedication, and the thrill of chasing your dreams.

Please tell us more about your character?

Of course! In the film, I play Felix, a mechanic on Team Nissan. As part of the pit crew, my character is responsible for those lightning-fast tyre changes during races. As David Harbour says in the trailer “The pit crew are gonna HATE you” You’ll have to watch to find out how much.

Who did you work with on this film and did you learn anything from them?

Working on Gran Turismo I was mainly with the pit crew for Orlando Bloom and David Harbour, but it was such a big production we were barely together although we flew around the world to the same locations and sets. Neil is a fantastic director and what he has done with this movie is phenomenal. It’s both a heartwarming tale of triumph over adversity, but also a thrilling ride where you’re on the edge of your seat. I think it’s going to be a real fan favourite.

You have had quite a varied career, what has been your favorite role and how do you keep it fresh?

It’s hard to pick a favourite among the diverse roles I’ve had the privilege to portray. Each role brings its own set of challenges and rewards. To keep my performances fresh, I focus on finding the truth in each character and exploring their nuances. I love delving into the unsaid things, the emotions beneath the surface. It’s a constant quest for that magical feeling of completely embodying a character and their journey.

Hollyoaks is one of the most popular soaps in the UK, what was it like doing such a huge show and do you still get recognized from that part?

Being a part of “Hollyoaks,” a beloved UK soap, was an incredible experience. The show’s popularity brought a unique energy to the set. As for recognition, no, it’s very rare. Some past watchers of that show know the storylines and then sometimes they say “OH YES ITS YOU – YOU WERE HORRIBLE”. It’s nice to be remembered for being nasty!

What attracted you to acting in the first place and how did you get into it?

My journey into acting began with improv evening classes during my school days. Those classes ignited a love for storytelling and delving into the minds of different characters. I distinctly remember a powerful improvisation session that made me realise the magic of acting – the ability to transport both myself and the audience into a different world. That’s what truly drew me in.

What is next for you?

Currently, I’m working on various projects and exploring new opportunities. I’m also writing something that delves into the manipulation of society through technology and the blurred lines of truth. I’m excited about the future and the stories yet to be told.
