OSCAR SPOTLIGHT: Nicolaj Kopernikus’s FROM ABOVE explores one man’s journey through loss, resilience and reconciliation

From Above (2023), directed and starring Nicolaj Kopernikus, is a profound short film that explores one man’s journey through loss, resilience and reconciliation. The film opens with Morten, played by Kopernikus, playing joyfully with his daughter in an apparently happy household, but cut a few years later, we find him dishevelled and living on the streets. What follows is a powerful and moving story of redemption, as the father attempts to win back the love of his child.

Kopernikus crafts an emotionally charged narrative, using sharp cinematography and a non-linear structure to keep the audience guessing as to the circumstances of Morten’s demise. Needless to say, Kopernikus embodies the central figure wonderfully, allowing audiences to empathise with the character despite battling some obvious demons.

At the heart of From Above is a beautiful examination between a parent and child with a smartly crafted screenplay that approaches its themes delicately. Despite its short running time and relatively sparse dialogue, viewers will have no problems understanding the complex and conflicting emotions of all the characters involved and it ends with a poignant finale which will sure to tug on your heartstrings.
