OSCAR SPOTLIGHT: Oscar Shortlisted An Avocado Pit directed by Ary Zara executive produced by Elliot Page and Pageboy Productions

A transgender (Gaya Medeiros) very comfortable with who they are, an acceptance and confidence that radiates to the world.

Director Ary Zara has woven a complex storyline of two taboos into a theme that stereotypes the lives of everyday people being everyday people; there is no cheap sex and nudity, no mindless violence and certainly no vulgar language punched with sexual innuendos.

Two individuals, one a confident and outgoing transgender and the other Claudio (Ivo Canelas) an individual at a crossroads in his life, however, he has been battling with his sexuality; call it a chance meeting, fate or just being in the right place at the right time and then the two walks of life meet and what ensues is a delightful coming together, that unravels beautifully and once they begin to talk with one another a natural phenomenon happens, they learn that there is far more than meets the eye.

Medeiros and Canelas are superb in their roles, the chemistry between the two brings a refreshing intimacy that slowly unwinds with the viewer enjoying the moment. A very believable storyline.

Cinematography by Leandro Ferrao lifts the film from what could quite easily have been shown as dark and seedy, quite the opposite, really it is filled with very thoughtful lighting that goes hand in glove as the film evolves.

A well-deserved nod from the Academy with the Oscar shortlist!
