OSCAR SPOTLIGHT: Oscar Shortlisted INVINCIBLE directed by Vincent Rene–Lortie

Vincent Rene–Lortie’s choice to write about mental health well-being is to be lauded, it is a difficult and vast subject and to focus on a young adult’s rebellious decision having only lived a short life and to make an upsetting decision is all the more reason to write about it.

Leading star Léokim Beaumier-Lépine, playing the teenager brings such authenticity and true grit to the role that the viewer reels back with trepidation knowing that this poor soul that the system somehow overlooked and failed miserably is left the only choice!!

The film’s panoramic sweeping landscapes and focus on water is an indication of the lack of physical and environmental entrapment that Marc feels, and it is also very evident that ‘Freedom,’ is the desire, however what is left tantalisingly dangling is what this actually means to the boy.

Cinematographer Alexandre Nour Desjardins use of colour, close-ups and sweeping landscape shots shows the enigma in the mind of a young person living with this condition.

A powerful film that is deeply troubling viewing, however, it is equally important that such topics are written and shown. Hoping it does well at the Oscars.
